Avalon New Jersey , in Cape May County, was settled in the 1600s by whaler yeomen who left New England to follow the route of the whales. It was named for an island in Celtic mythology. Located at the southern most tip of New Jersey, Avalon is less than a dayís drive from many major New England cities and Canada. Itís an ideal place to raise a family or to retire and has excellent schools, medical facilities and government services. Avalon is considered a premier family-oriented community that offers a beautiful bathing beach, playgrounds, parks, and a number of sports camps, many excellent restaurants, shops and family activities. A twenty-minute drive south on Ocean Highway takes you to the Wildwood Boardwalk Amusement Park, and thirty minutes north is Atlantic City and itsí casinos and shows. The area of Cape May County surrounding Avalon has historic villages, beautiful gardens, cultural arts, golf, antique shops and is easily accessible by the Garden State Parkway, the Atlantic City Expressway and Route 9.
