Avalon New Jersey , in Cape May County, was settled in the 1600s by whaler yeomen who left New England to follow the route of the whales. It was named for an island in Celtic mythology. The Cape May area boasts many families who are descended from the original Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower. With such a fascinating history, and the beauty of sandy beaches edged with warm ocean waters, makes Avalon a wonderful place to visit or live year round. Several barrier island stretch along the eastern edge of Cape May County and form the oceanfront resort towns that include Avalon, as well as Stone Harbor, Cape May Point and Cape May, the Wildwoods, Sea Isle City and Ocean City. Each place is unique with its’ own distinct personality and share the beautiful beaches and cool ocean breezes that generations have loved for centuries. Located at the southern most tip of New Jersey, Avalon is less than a day’s drive from many major New England cities and Canada. It’s an ideal place to raise a family or to retire and has excellent schools, medical facilities and government services. Avalon is considered a premier family-oriented community that offers a beautiful bathing beach, playgrounds, parks, and a number of sports camps, many excellent restaurants, shops and family activities. A twenty-minute drive south on Ocean Highway takes you to the Wildwood Boardwalk Amusement Park, and thirty minutes north is Atlantic City and its’ casinos and shows. The area of Cape May County surrounding Avalon has historic villages, beautiful gardens, cultural arts, golf, antique shops and is easily accessible by the Garden State Parkway, the Atlantic City Expressway and Route 9.

If you are arriving for a weekend, traffic onto the island is heaviest from noon Friday until 8:00pm Friday night, and again Saturday morning from 7:00am until around noon. When leaving Stone Harbor, late Sunday night or very early Monday morning is the best time to avoid the rush.
